Sawdust and Water
Sawdust and Water is an exploration of the residual properties of water in relationship to Kandos in mid-west NSW.
Kandos is located on the land of the Dabee tribe of the Wiradjuri People. I pay my respects to caretakers, knowledge holders and elders past, present and future. Materials in this work including a lightning-struck tree and rotting endemic tree species along with footage of Wiradjuri land were gathered from a mountain and a river in this region. Pieces of a wood-staved pipeline were also extracted from roadside areas in the region with care taken to preserve underground animal burrow shelters in the remnant pipeline.
This project was funded by a NSW Artist Grant through the National Association for the Visual Arts and funds from the Cementa Contemporary Arts Festival. Dust and Water was a festival exhibition outcome from research into early 20th Century Australian water infrastructure while artist in residence in Kandos - a regional town with significant cement production, mining and attendant water infrastructure history.

Frozen sawdust and charcoal

During viewing hours a pair of Frozen sawdust ice blocks melted into oil drip trays in 70 Fleming Street, a former mechanics garage in Kandos

Staved-timber sections from an old pipeline were used to secure the ice to rods. A unique state was captured each day as the block melted and eventually collapsed into the tray. Photo: Georgia Steele
